The Automotive Innovation Award (AIA) jury has announced the nominees for awards in the Sustainability, Safety and Accessibility categories. The five student teams up for the Student Award have also been named. The nominees will present their innovations to the judges in December, who will then select the finalists. Winners will be announced at the finals on February 5, 2024. Brief descriptions of all entries can be found on this AIA website.

The nominees for the Automotive Innovation Award 2024 are:

Category 1: Sustainability

  • LeydenJar – Silicon anodes for increasing battery capacity
  • Econogy – Electric powertrains for trailers (yDrive)
  • Venyard – Original parts self-assembly
  • Innovam – Virtual (group) training with realistic 3D aspects
  • Karhof (Sustainer) – Lightweight cargo body built from recyclable material

Category 2: Safety

  • Total Safety Solutions – Universal “off switch” for electric vehicles (Emergency Plug)
  • Heijmans, V-tron, Swarco and NXP – V2X emergency intervention at roadwork sites
  • TomTom – Real-time integration of multiple map layers using an open-source platform (Orbis Maps)
  • Zego – Fleet insurance with built-in behavioral training
  • Perciv AI – Next generation AI-driven radar detection

Category 3: Accessibility

  • TomTom – Real-time integration of multiple map layers using an open source platform (Orbis Maps)
  • EVShield – Wall socket in sturdy housing for any mode-2 charging cable
  • robotTUNER – Autopilot for buses and trucks
  • Dutch Automated Mobility – Elmo remote-controlled car sharing
  • Aon – Mobility insurance for the driver rather than the vehicle

Category 4: Student teams

  • InMotion – Fast-recharging battery for electric cars
  • Eterna – Car with replaceable elements so it lasts a lifetime
  • Polar – Affordable, sustainable and autonomous vehicle for research in Antarctica
  • Hydrogen race car – Powerful, hydrogen-fueled race car
  • Electric Superbike Twente – Electric Superbike with replaceable battery pack

“The incredible diversity and high quality of the entries made the choices difficult,” said Jan Peter Balkenende, chairman of the independent jury. “In the end, we have nominated 19 entries, who we now invite to present their innovations and answer our questions.” The final will be on February 5, 2024. During the exclusive Automotive Innovation Dinner, the jury will announce the winners of the Automotive Innovation Awards 2024.

Automotive Innovation Award Foundation
This year’s prize is being organized for the fifth time by the Automotive Innovation Award Foundation, a joint effort of ANWB, BOVAG, LeasePlan, RAI Association, RAI Automotive Industry NL and Roland Berger. The foundation aims to highlight the enormous innovation capacity of this sector in the Netherlands.
